I've Traded Fashion for Furniture {temporarily!}

OK, OK ... I stole that line from Carrie Bradshaw from the last SATC movie. But, it's been true these last few months of settling into our "home-away-from-home" in NYC. Thanks to the help of some of my very talented and gifted interior design friends and being obsessed with interior design magazines, blogs, the very cool on-line magazine Lonny, and of course the adorable Nate Berkus Show. I have been able to transform our 2 bedroom apartment into a home for 5 {plus the 75 lb. Golden!}. I still have some work to do, but it's getting there. I scored some tickets to the Nate Berkus Show and after being stood up the first time {I'll forgive you, Nate}, I got in on the second try {and VIP treatment}. It was worth it. Loved the show, the experience I shared with my good friend D who drove from Saratoga to join me, and the tips Nate gave us. D and I were good audience participates - clapped, chuckled, cheered all at the appropriate times... It wasn't hard - Nate made it easy!

There's nothing you caaaaan't do now you're in Neeeeew Yoooork"...

I hear my kids singing this along with Jaz-Z as we cross the GW Bridge into Manhattan to start our new life in the city of dreams. The car is packed full with anticipation, anxiousness, excitement, worry {me} oh yeah... and all the necessities {including our 75 lb. Golden Retriever, Ginger}. Luckily we didn't have to bring everything from our 4500 square foot clap board Colonial we left in an idyllic college town to move to a 1200 square foot 2 bedroom apartment on Manhattan's UES. It's exciting! It's adventure! The mood is light, we are all singing to Jay-Z and hoping the best for the next chapter of our lives...

My husband's job changed after the Fall of '08. So did our family life. He started living and working in NYC Monday - Friday. I stayed home and dealt with the kids, the dog, and the house. I started my own shopping blog that highlighted style and trends. I directed readers where to find them locally in our town's amazing shops and boutiques. I hosted shopping events {before Ms. Wintour, I might add}, and did "enhancements" {make-overs}. I had visions of turning it into an on-line magazine for local style mavin's. Who knows - maybe I will some day.This lifestyle of only seeing daddy on the weekends was quickly taking it's toll. We went from a family that ate dinner together every night to barely seeing each other. The week ends weren't long enough. Dad {Peter} wanted to veg out at home while Mom needed to get out and play {without the kids}. It was becoming quite clear that we needed to make a change for the family."Let's move the family to New York! It will be great!! You love New York!!!" Peter exclaimed many times and I had thought to myself. I do love New York. It was worth a try. I jumped into this crazy idea with both feet and started frantically looking into schools for our girls {E - middle school. M and L - elementary school}. That was no easy feat, as anyone knows who has raised children in NYC and tried to get their kids into "good" schools. Which pretty much covers private, parochial or well zoned public schools. With a lot of phone calls, the help of some super moms who advised me on how the system works, trips to the city for tests and more tests, forms to fill out, money to pay, novenas being prayed, and proof of address {people rent studio apartments at $2000/mo just to secure a place in a "good" public school}. Thank the Almighty that we choose an apartment that would fit our family {snuggly} if we did make this change in a highly sought after public school zone.

We could do this. We will do this! We rent our house when we are not using it {always good to own a house in a destination town}, got the kids in good schools, got an apartment on the Upper East Side , everything is set.

That is only just the beginning....

My very good friend, Carolyn, just gave me the above print for our new place in NYC. It is the perfect reminder for me, especially these days. Life {midlife} is NUTS! Marriage, kids, aging parents, getting ready to rent the house for a few weeks of track, setting up the apartment to be our home-away-from-home, worrying about the oil spill, the financial crisis, walking the dog, the heat, new schools for the girls {are they reading enough? are their math skills sharp enough for the competitive nature of NYC? Are they (am I) ready for all of that???}. Plus providing healthy meals, working out, and maintaining a spiritual life is enough to send the most sane person over the edge! I don't even have a full-time job outside the house, and only have 3 kids (I have sisters with as many as 8). So how do we stay sane? By keeping calm and girlfriends. My girlfriends, which include my sisters, are the ones I turn to especially during these times when I am feeling frightened and unsure of myself. They listen. They let me vent, whine, laugh, cry - whatever is needed at that moment. They share a good book, a cup of coffee, a run, or a much needed glass of wine by the end of the day. They make me see the humor and beauty in life and encourage me to take chances. They point out how precious our kids are, how important raising them is even if we may not feel like we are doing it well. So, THANK YOU to all my friends for keeping me calm and allowing me to carry on!

Can't get too dressed up for the drive-in so I chose to wear them with my Paige Denim boyfriends {from Violet's of Saratoga}. A cardi {J.Crew} is a must when the sun goes down. Don't forget the homemade popcorn {I found re-usable containers in the classic popcorn motif at Target}, bug spray and blankets to snuggle in and on!

Tory Burch "Miller" Sandals. Unfortunately, I did not find them downtown Saratoga, but on a recent trip to Las Vegas. I'm a big fan of Tory Burch. Much of her inspiration comes from her {former actress} mother, Reva {which she named her very popular ballet flat after}. She plays tribute to her mom's exceptional style, love of travel and her socialite standing in many of her designs. The catch is... her price points are attainable to those of us who want to buy "designer wear" but at reasonable prices. You get quality and style. I've had my Reva Ballet Flats for... let's see... my youngest was in pre-school... 4 years! And counting. Looks like these Miller sandals will get me through a few summers.

The Real Housewives of Saratoga Celebrate a Birthday and the Return of SATC!

OK - we are more than housewives... Artist, teachers, designers, sales women, lawyers, nurses, and most of all... moms - but hear us roar! We went out to celebrate the return of some old friends.... Samantha, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte and the birthday of a very stylish local friend - Janet. The perfect night started at the Wilton Mall {who needs Vegas?}, followed by cosmos {of course} at Tiz Now and some nibblies at Bailey's. we did our best to not let the SATC girls down in the style department - Janet treated herself to a dress from Rent-the Runway, where you can rent a dress for a special occasion and it will only cost you $50.00. One friend referred to it as Janet's "net flix dress" - works about the same way!

Richard's new "drop off" ensemble is a welcome update. He's now a retro dad wearing black EB Tek pants from Eddie Bauer, a cotton zip sweater from Banana Republic and Adidas Samba Sneakers.

Cutting the Rug with his beautiful wife, Deborah. Richard made it clear that his clothes had to be stylish yet comfortable enough to wear dancing {another great love}. He and his wife currently dance with Tango Fusion Dance Company.

As a software developer, Richard doesn't have a big need for lots of stuffy suits and ties, but wanted a more put together casual look that he could wear when traveling. The khaki sport coat is from Macy's. Sweater, shirt, and jeans all from Banana Republic.

Every well dressed man needs at least one good suit. We got his at Brook Brother's. Tie from Jos. A Banks. Deborah {wearing a flirty dress from Violet's} is his best accessory.

My new Dermalogica Lip Renewal Complex and Multivitamin Hand and Nail Treatment. These two products have made me very happy. Dry skin has plagued me my whole life. I am constantly looking for a product that will help my sorry Irish, raw red dry hands {pretty - huh?} get the relief they are so craving and I believe I have found it. I've been using it for a week. On The Street with a legend!

It was a uniquely New York moment. Seeing Bill Cunningham on the street. Surreal. I've started many Sunday mornings with the "womens sports page" a.k.a. the NY Times Style section. Now I enjoy the video stream of Bill's "On the Street" photos on the Times website where he highlights the trends he saw while working the beat the prior week.

Mr. Cunningham has been capturing fashion's elite along with the trickle up who walk New York's streets for 50 years. This man is a fashion legend. An icon. At 80 plus years he still rides his bike, takes his photos, and lives his passion. An inspiration. He was generous and interested in my girls. He pointed out Carnegie Hall to them (where he resides in an apartment on top - soon to be converted to music classrooms - I wondered where that would leave him). Telling them it used to be a very bohiemian place to live with lots of artists.

He is now the subject of a documentary, Bill Cunningham New York, which I am anxious to see.

He was gracious, interesting, and patient while I snapped pictures of him. While my dream of meeting him was fullfilled - my other dream of being in the NY Times Style section went unfullfilled. Another important lesson - to be humble while living your dream.

...Richard. Husband, father, software designer, dancer, and fashionably challenged. Try this for a visual.... PJ bottoms, Life is Good tee, over sized 10 year old {I'm being generous here... might be 20 year} ski jacket, Doc Martins {from the 80's - yes cool, yet old}, disheveled hair, & a coffee cup. This is at school pick up. The best part of that ensemble? The coffee and his personality. Thanks to Richard's Southern charm it will make this style enlightenment so much easier.

I had a wedding to go to a few weeks ago. I planned on wearing my LBD - but wanted to spice it up a bit. I remembered seeing the above lovelies at Silverado. Perfect.... I now had a reason to splurge! Why is it we ladies need a reason to treat ourselves to something special? I did all the female psycho analysis. Do I need {translation: deserve} these? I did have some conservative hoops or pearls to wear - but, hey! I didn't buy a new dress {more rationalization}, I got my shoes at Marshalls {pre-Stella's} and I don't go to weddings at the Carlyle {in NYC} that often {ever}. So, even though Mother's Day is around the corner, I decided to go for it. And guess what? They not only go with my LBD - but look great with my new David Kahn jeans {from Violet's} paired with my black jacket {from Aggie's} and a white tee {by Vince from Aggie's}. Come to think of it these babies would look good with ANYTHING. Why? Because they are made by a Parisian designer {Catherine Popesco}... And we all know how well those Parisians dress. They can take a basic outfit and turn into something spectacular. Their secret is kick butt accessories. Jewelry, handbags, shoes, etc. So during these rough economic times when you can't splurge on a new outfit - don't skimp on the accessories. They stand out and make an impact. Plus you can get miles of wear out of them long after the big event....

and sometimes we just have to treat ourselves....

Finally our inner Carrie Bradshaw can be released. We Saratogian Fashionistas can stroll down Broadway, gaze into the window at Stella's {494 Broadway} and fall in love... with a pump, a wedge, or a sassy sandal. Stella's opened this past week end just in time for Spring {fever}. Thank you, Laura Farrar {yes, the same Laura who owns another DTSB favorite - Violet's}, for hearing our cry and filling a major void. I personally loved the above sandals by Sam Edelman - great colors and textures. You will also find Cole Haan, Jack Rogers {a classic, must have sandal}, Nina, Frye, Seychelles, and much more!

How cool are these? I stumbled upon these while catching up on some of my favorite blogs over the weekend. These gloves were featured on Daily Candy. Check out the site along with the video featuring the renowned glove designer, Daniel Storto, from our neighboring town... Gloversville, NY. I fell in love with them because of the cool/sleek design, the fact that a big time designer chose to stay true to his roots and family's trade in a small Upstate NY town {very Euro}, the $25.00 price tag, and the fact that there is still snow on the ground! I need to add a bit of glamour to what is becoming very glum! These gloves are a favorite of the late Alexander McQueen, Bob Mackie, and Derek Lam to name a few . Plus they bring back found memories of playing with my mom's gloves when I was a kid {the girls are going to looove these}, will look so cool with my LBD, and again release my inner Mad Men style that I'm crazy for these days...

We Are The World {Help Haiti this Valentines Day}

It is the 25th anniversary of the original "We Are The World" song and video. All proceeds went to help Africa. They raised $67 dollars. I loved the original song written by Michael Jackson and sung by all the great artist from the 80's - Michael himself, Cindy Lauper, Bruce, Bob Dillion, and Barbara Streisand just to name a few. All the big names of today have come together to remake the song and to raise money for another very worthy cause... Haiti. That video hasn't been released yet. I found this video on YouTube and loved the underground flare. I love each of these YouTube artist. No hype - just beautiful singing with a lot of heart.

Give Your Heart to Haiti this Valentines day. This is your opportunity to enjoy many of the local shops and restaurants on Sunday and help Haiti. Grab your Valentine, shop and eat for a good cause. Book Club Night

The girls got together for a lively discussion, good food and a little vino last night. We read and discussed the Saratoga Reads book last month, so no Potato Peel Pie last night. Nope - it' was good 'ol Southern food! This month the pick was The Help by Kathern Stockett. How does my book group work? Not only do we read the book, but we take in the whole experience both intellectually and gastronomically. The Help is a moving book about racial inequality in 1960's Jackson, Mississippi. Some of the characters I loved, some not so much. It's a page turner that really captures the time and made for a great conversation. Food plays an important role in the book and in our gatherings. That is why we had Hattie's fried chicken {hostess provides the main dish} as the main course, along with a few sides, appetizers, wine, and dessert {provided by the other members - thankfully no chocolate pie!}. We have enjoyed almost 10 years of lots of great reads, heated discussions, and most of all ... friendship.

Winter Weekends ... {gift ideas}

The week end started off great and then it didn't and then it did and then it's over and time to start all over again. Ever have one of those?

My family's weekend started by meeting a bunch of our friends out for dinner. Great friends, good chatter, yummy food {that I didn't have to cook} was on the way.... And then my daughter {who looked very pale} came to sit on my lap and {you guessed it} lost it all over the table. A quick thinking dad grabbed the bread basket {only one roll left} almost quick enough for her make some of it in there. Needless to say - our night ended abruptly.

The rest of the weekend was pretty low key for us. Lazy days with some of us staying in our jammies for most of the day {not mentioning any names here}. Along with the sips of ginger ale, naps on the couch, wii games, the Game of Life, movies, and a fire {lots of coffee a little wine and good dinners made by dad}, I lit one of my favorite candles that I picked up at Antara Home. The candles are by Red Flower. The scent is so pure. I chose Spanish Gardenia. It was winter outside, but regardless of the unpleasant aromas the stomach bug can bring, it was Spring inside our home.

....family, friends, laughter, stimulating conversation, good food paired with amazing wine, patience while doing homework, a strong cup of joe and good wifi... Thanks to apartment living all of this will have to happen in our NYC kitchen/dining room. Yes, yes it's also part of the living room - more about that later... We started furnishing the new pad with the basics - a table and chairs were high on my husbands list to get done and thanks to West Elm and their amazing designs we found something that worked functionally for him and design wise for me! Carolyn and Laura {two of my dearest friends who both happen to be interior decorators - lucky me!} support my contemporary vision for the apartment. The above is where I'd like to see it go... A little edgy, yet romantic, yet practical. What do you think?

Yo! I'm Back!

Sorry for the lack of post. I have been a bit busy setting up our pied-a-terre in New York! I always thought this would happen later in life. When the girls were older and on their way off to college. But, my husband isn't that patient. Add that to his carpe diem mentality and voila! We are part-time New Yorkers again! Well..... It's not that easy.... His job {mostly} and our desire to share the city with the girls has open up an opportunity we couldn't refuse.

What does this mean to you???

I can share what I'm finding locally in the Spa City and the Big Apple. And of course have fun with it all... Yes, that means shopping events and giveaways!

A few highlights so far? The Tim Burton exhibit at the MOMA was very cool to my tweens who love to draw. Great exhibit showing how his sketches came to life. A walk over the the Brooklyn Bridge - a great way to take in lower Manhattan. Skating at Wollman Rink {forget the crowds at Rockefeller Center}, and this couch I got at Props of Saratoga. I can finally release my inner Mad Men. I'm excited to embrace a contemporary look for the apartment with the help of Props, my interior design friends, and some New York finds. Stay tuned!

It was a busy Christmas season. I personally had a lot going on. My hectic schedule continues. DTSB will be off to a slow start while I find the right balance in my life. Husband, kids, spirituality, mom duties, friends, dog, work outs and of course blogging. 2009 was a great year as far as DTSB is concerned. Put a Lid On It

It's official. We've had our first snow fall of the year and the temperatures have gone down into the 30's. Time to bundle up. Last week I was saying it didn't feel much like Christmas because of the warm temperatures , but that all changed this past week end. The snow came just in time to make our tree selection festive and white.

My favorite hat that keeps me nice and toasty warm while at the bus stop, out for walks with Ginger, or strolling downtown is a hat by e-ko logic. I got mine last year at Aggie's. I was happy to see they have them again this year {in great colors} along with scarves and gloves by the same company. It will make a great gift for someone on my shopping list {who doesn't need a hat?}. Best part about it? It's made out of recycled clothing. This hat is 100% recycled cashmere. What that means exactly is that moth eaten cashmere sweater that you love and have worn to death can be reborn as a hat or a glove or a scarf or many of the other amazing designs this Troy based husband and wife team dream up. It's local, it's green and it's cashmere - it's perfect for the next winter storm.

This is one of the many beautifully decorated Christmas trees the girls and I saw on our recent visit to Manhattan to kick off the Christmas season. We saw the snowflake over 57th Street, the angels at Rockefeller Center {and the tree of course}, the windows at Saks, Barneys, and Bergdorfs. Now we are ready to deck our own halls. Off to Bob's for the tree today and a day of eggnog, carols and a few broken ornaments!

My daughter turned 11 last week. She is officially a tween. High on her birthday wish list were things like iPhones, laptops, and a flat screen t.v. for her room {gotta' a love a girl who can dream}. No more dolls, bikes, and puppies. Nope, we've moved on to the next level. Thankfully, she is very girly. She also listed hoop earrings {we compromised with small glittery ones from Silverado not the large Jennifer Lopez style ones she envisioned!} and the above necklace. We saw it one day while shopping for a birthday gift for another friend at G. Willikers. It's the coolest piece of jewelry for this age group. It should be. The design by M3 Girl Designs is the brainchild of another tween from Texas. She came up with the idea of recycling bottle caps {very green}, paints cool designs on them and turns them into magnets so they can be interchanged as often as your little tween's mood changes {yes - they offer that many charms}. The choker necklace comes in a few different colors {black, pink or bright blue}, has a small metal pendant that the charms attach to and costs around $8. Charms {also about $8} have all different themes {birthday, peace, love, animals, holiday, etc.}. It's the perfect birthday gift or stocking stuffer for your tween, it won't break the bank and is age appropriate!

American women love their shampoo. We shampoo everyday, sometimes twice a day. Our chic European friends only shampoo once a week {think of all that time saved}! Americans also love a lot of lather. Here's a little known fact... Shampoo doesn't need a high lather content to cleanse properly. It's actually more gentle for our hair and scalp to have a low lather content. American women have a hard time purchasing shampoos that don't lather, therefore, the companies add detergents for us lather-head obsessed Americans.

Let's talk about pH. Proper pH for hair, skin and scalp should be between 4.5 and 5.5 acid balanced. Water is neutral at 7 pH, as is baby shampoo. So are tears. This is why baby's don't cry when they get baby shampoo in their eyes. Works for the little tykes, but not for us because it is not the best for our hair and hair color. Some retail brand shampoos are as high in alkalinity as pH of 9. Ouch! Think cleanser or perm solution. Not what you want to use to keep your hair color from fading. I highly recommend professional salon shampoo and conditioners and products which are acid balanced and won't damage your hair or scalp.

Warning: I'm sure you've noticed your favorite salon brand {Redken or Bumble and Bunble} in CVS alongside the Suave, Pantene and the others? Before you think you've found a deal, here's the skinny. Those salon products are "diverted", or black marketed. Diversion is a billion dollar industry the beauty business is fighting everyday. Those products can be up to two years old, and could have switched hands six times before you purchase it for your use. They are not any less expensive than in the salon, and are not guaranteed. Please, STOP and put it down. Purchasing that product hurts your local salon/stylists/business owner. When visiting your local salon for your haircut or color, ask your stylist for their personal recommendation for your hair type. They will be more than happy to give you consultation for home haircare.

I've been really, realllllly good this year {well, I've at least really tried}. I've nursed my husband back from a hip replacement, I'm on week # 3 of the flu {3 kids = 3 weeks} and I've only mildly complained, and as a follower of this blog - I've even helped YOU to find the best fashion, gift ideas for everyone from kids, teachers, girlfriends, boyfriends and dogs to beautiful accessories for home or garden in Saratoga Springs {why weigh that sled down too much - buy local}.

While window shopping yesterday, I saw in the window at Hunt, Ltd. an original HERMES KELLY BAG IN CROCODILE! Now, this is every fashionista's dream bag. A classic named after the fashion icon Grace Kelly in the 50's. I had never seen one before - let alone hold one! It had all the details the Kelly bag is known for - the timeless tailored design, the handle, the clasp, and the lock. It was love at first sight. I would use it every day. Take good care of it. So, please Santa - could you please put this under the tree for me on Christmas Day? Something tells me my husband won't like the $10,000 price tag - so you are my only hope.

Gossip Girl Look Saratoga Style

Yes, I'm coming clean. I'm old enough to be Serena and Jenny's mom and I watch Gossip Girl. I like it. It's a bit 90210 {the original series - and yes again, I'm old enough to remember and have enjoyed that show and I am a little depressed that those characters now play the parents on the remake!} meets Sex in the City. High School angst meets Big City fashion. Plus, I'm a sucker for anything fashionably New York. Monday's episode had a great Prohibition-era Halloween party scene celebrating the opening of a club. Now that's a party I could truly embrace! Love that flapper 1920's look. You look great {no scary green body paint to remove after too many scare-tini's}. In addition, it can double as an amazing Holiday party dress. The Gossip Girl bunch was decked out in Chanel {of course}, but that is a look that is easy to duplicate. I found the above short black sequence cocktail dress at Frivolous Boutique, 18 Division Street {participating in the upcoming Shopping Event}. I paired it with some grey, black and pearl strands - the more the better, a headband with a flower motif, and a killer cocktail ring and voila... Gossip Girl has nothing on DTSB! So whether you are looking for a great Halloween costume, a Holiday party outfit, or both - this is a look that is both classic and stylish!

The Quest for Lushes Lashes {Beauty Tips by Maria}

Mascara Facts: Did you know that Maybelline sells a tube of Great Lash mascara every 1.9 seconds somewhere in the world? It continues to be the number one selling mascara of all time. My First? Maybelline Very black. Mascara is still the product of choice for me. I wouldn't walk out the door without wearing it. I've tried them all… from retailer and department store brands, from high to low end. It all comes down to finding the right wand/brush for your lash type. The most cutting edge product out there currently for mascara is a product called Blinc {a favorite of DTSB}. Blinc mascara forms tiny little water-resistant tubes around each lash. So, you can cry your eyes out, go from work to the gym, have an allergy attack and your lashes will look just as good as they did when you first applied it. Blinc will not smudge, flake or run… How cool is that? Find it at Spa Cascada.

Mascara Tips:

1.) When you first open the mascara. Don't pump the wand to prime it every time you use it. This pushes air into the tube which causes bacteria, and dries the mascara out.
2.) For a daytime application I prefer mascara to the upper lashes only. If you're applying to the Lower lids, hold the brush vertical for an easier application. Keep Q-tips on hand for quick clean ups. My pet peeve...mascara dots. If you have wide set eyes apply more toward the nose when finished, close set eyes more on the outer 1/3. Eyes too round? Mascara only on the outer 2/3.
3.) Mascara should be tossed away after 6 months anyway.

There are a new field of products out there that actually grows and enhances lashes. And you thought you had to be born with long and lushes lashes! These products promote the growth of new and healthier lashes. I recommend the natural, over the counter approach found at Spa Cascada. Amy carries Neulash. Now this is a fashion statement I can stand behind. Thankfully, Laura Farrar owner of Violet's of Saratoga has heard our plea. We have amazing clothing boutiques to shop in all over town. Some of them have started carrying shoes to make up for the lack of choices we have had lately thanks to the Shoe Depot's dwindling stock. But, Ladies, I am hear today to tell you that come Spring 2010 we will have one store fully stocked with pumps, flats, booties, wedges, and kitten heals in all colors and sizes! Who better than Laura to take on this endeavor? She already owns and operates one of the most successful stores in town - so I'm sure her venture into shoes will be done right. Vows

Peter and I made ours 13 years ago today. We've had our ups and downs, but our commitment to each other and the sacrament of marriage has not wavered. He was and remains today my best friend, my first and only true love, and my prince charming {although that one I now share with our 3 girls}.

We are entering middle age and must face the challenges that go along with it. As my brother said in his homily {reflecting on the gospel reading from the Wedding Of Cana} that day 13 years ago "...We live with the hope of the future. We know Jesus is more ahead of us than behind us. Peter and Susan may Christ who transforms our lives continue to change yours in the years ahead. Where there are waters of doubt be changed to wine of faith, where there are waters of of despair be changed to the wine of hope, where there are waters of brokenness be changed to the wine of healing and reconciliation, and where there is the water of selfishness be changed to the wine of love."

I lift my glass to my husband and our marriage today and all the days to come! Happy Anniversary, Peter. I love you.

Hear me roar... And watch me shop.... For the latest trends....Downtown...

I found the above fabulous leopard printed faux fur vest by Adrienne Landau at Hunt, Ltd. {ridiculously cheap - but not cheap}. A perfect statement piece. Hunt, Ltd. is having a huge clearance sale in order to make room for new arrivals. Run don't walk. This vest is perfect for our Upstate weather. I plan on dressing it up for upcoming Holiday parties with all black or creamy winter white or dress it down with a tee and jeans, add some funky baubles and some red {yes, red} lipstick to follow the trends and the look will be complete. Animal prints when worn as an accent can add enough roar to an outfit, so don't over do it {no matching shoes or belt or purse - just one of these pieces will make your outfit spot on}.

The booties {although not my every day Mom wear} were hard to pass up {at 40 bucks why should I?} from 80 West. How perfect are they with this vest? This is another trend that I sorta' love. These boots can be worn with skirts, jeans or slim pants. Looking forward to a trip to NYC with my gal pals - this outfit will release my inner Carrie Bradshaw!

It's that time again... Time to come out and shop! This event will be bigger and better then the last two. More time, more stores, more spas, more restaurants, and more giveaways... Saratoga City Ballet Company is a non-profit organization that offers scholarships to local kids to take ballet lessons. This scholarship fund allows kids who otherwise could not afford dance instructions the opportunity to experience a classic art form. THE BIG BANG THEORY

My beauty budget is spent primarily on my face. Every 3-4 weeks I painstakingly get a TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peel or an oxygen facial. I follow up at home with Retin A and vitamin C cream. I do all this just to combat the signs of aging. Sound familiar? Lately, I've noticed the trends of celebrities in the 40+ category with their bangs cut. They look fabulous! Whether you like Kathy Lee Gifford or not, adding bangs has taken years off her looks! Sooooo, I grabbed my shears and I started cutting. I haven't had bangs in yeeeears. VOILA...done. I looked younger instantly. If I had known it was that easy I would have done it sooner. My smile lines seemed to wane. Even a neighborhood kid said I looked like Selena Gomez {Hello...She's 16! I'll take that as a compliment, thank you very much!} The bang theory was catching on. After my hair colorist saw my new look, she decided to cut hers. Yes, I can cut my own bangs, but the rest I leave to my own favorite stylist Shannon DelGado, owner of Sanctuary Salon on Railroad Place. DTSB has embraced the trend too.

Will I continue with the peels and facials? You bet. But if you are like me and looking for a quick inexpensive way to take years off your looks without breaking the bank - try the big bang theory for yourself and look years younger today...

The Car Coat

My fall shopping continued over the week-end. Check out my Twitter Updates {lower left} for pictures of other great discoveries I found along the way {the video was a mistake - still an iphone novice - but aren't those booties from 80 West fabulous??? And how about the new home store on Broadway - Props??? Love it! More about that later}.

I'm a big fan of the car coat. I like the length and the fact that it can easily be dressed up or down - perfect for my lifestyle. I found the above coat by Tulle at Violet's. Mine is in navy blue. I love the urban flare. The details are what got me. Scalloped front, exposed brass zipper, slimming waistband, and the zippy stripped lining. I've had my eye out for a new coat for the season and Violet's did not disappoint. They have lots to choose from {car coats, puffy coats, short, long, plaid, solid}. I happen to like a lighter weight coat because I'm always in and out of the car. The price sealed the deal... $123.00.

Cozy up to Fall {Giveaway winner Announced}

It's here girls, whether you like it or not. I know it feels like yesterday that we were wearing bathing suits for that 2 week summer we had, but it's time to move on and remember how incredible this season is. Football games, apple picking, pumpkin carving, mums, red wine, trick-or-treating, a cozy fire, Oktoberfest, and sweaters. I treated myself to this sweater today. Found it at Aggie's. Totally love Vince. Will live in this sweater all season and I'm sure many seasons to come. I have a few Vince sweaters from seasons back and they never disappoint. Stylish yet comfy. If we have to wear sweaters and we must in the North East then we might as well look good in them. This one as a jacket with a scarf or belted with skinny jeans and booties can go from the football field to the Wine Bar without a problem.

I'm all for my smart phone and google calendar - but sometimes {a lot of times} I just gotta' write it down! This binder by Russell and Hazel from PaperDolls of Saratoga lets me do just that in a very cool and stylish way {v. important}. Love the black and white mod binder, but the accessories is what keeps me on top of who needs what, where and when. Or, where did I see that great top? What website did she say to check out? I needed what at Price Chopper? His appointment is when? You get the idea. They have great inserts for the binder to make it work for you and your needs. Card holders, calendar, line paper, graph paper, recipe pages and much more. Get some school supplies of your own, get organized, and look good doing it!

Leggings, oversized sweaters, one shoulder tops, & Fame

You guessed it. The Eighties are Baaaaaack! If you lived it the first time - it's best to leave the neon brights, Madonna bracelets, and little knit leggings to the under 20 crowd. I'm all for embracing trends - but must draw a line when I'm dressing like my 10 yr. old {she looks great in the bright little hoop earrings and leggings... me on the other hand - I wore that when I saw the Go-Go's in '82}. One way for us 80's survivors to tackle the trend without looking like we are trying to relive the glory days is to wear slim dark denim leggings by J Brand. Gwen wasn't strolling Broadway this week, but if she were, she could have found these great fitting jeans {they have a waist band, zipper and pockets!} at Aggie's Boutique. I plan on pairing these denim leggings with a long white ruffle shirt and belt.

Back to School {Blogging} Uniform

The hip is replaced {husband}. New clothes, sneakers, and shoes {for the girls} are bought. Pencils, glue, hand sanitizer {no swine flu, please}, notebooks, crayons, rulers, etc. are packed away in new backpacks. It's back to school, back to good health for my family, and back to blogging for me. I look forward to hitting the streets now that Rachel won {filly power!}, summer is over, my husband is on the road to recovery and the girls are back learning the three R's. High on my shopping list this Fall? Boyfriends. Blazers and Jeans - that is. I'm due for a replacement of my own. New jeans and a new hip blazer should do the trick. Hip Replacement

Today my husband goes in to have his hip replaced, but hopefully his coolness will remain! I'm confident it will. In the meantime while I'm sitting in the waiting room and in between rosaries, I plan on leafing through the September Vogue {can't wait to see the above movie}. The girls and I took a road trip downstate for a few days to visit my very good and very accommodating friends. The girls enjoyed the pool and the Long Island Sound while I caught up up with my gal pals.

Back to school shopping. Picked these cute ensembles up at Ms. Scarlett. They insisted on going to their new favorite downtown store.

Something for them... Something for.... my friend {tricked ya' - it's not all about me} who just celebrated a birthday . She has a keen eye and likes to mix bold pieces with traditional cuts {she stays true to her interior design style and background}. I value her friendship and her style. She has amazing taste and a great flare for life. Happy Birthday, Carolyn!

No hotel stay for me this summer {and I'm sure I'm not alone}. No Ritz Carlton's, no Hilton's, no Marriott's, no Ramada Inns {opps... yes there was one for a night - yippeee!?? Not}. I can just feel the pity. Instead of the woe is me mentality {trust me I can easily go there} - I'm making my bedroom the hotel suite my husband and I can look forward to being in every night {get your head out of the gutter - this is a classy blog}. Antara Home on Spring Street is making that task an easier one. Raj has brought his gorgeous Italian linens north {from Albany} for the month and offering them at a 50 - 70% discount! Who needs the Ritz when you can have Italian made 720 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets in beautiful patterns that only the Europeans can dream up? I'm hoping Raj and his beautiful stock will fall in love with Saratoga, bring up more fine home furnishings, and STAY!

A sea of guests, the track, the pool, soirees, fund raisers, the ballet, concerts and the orchestra at SPAC. Barbeque's, picnics, and polo. I love it all. Take it in and enjoy it all. Top it off with all the mother/wife duties {food must be bought and prepared, laundry done, chauffeur the girls to play dates, various lessons,etc}. It can be exhausting yet exhilarating! Remind me of this in February when hibernation is in full swing! A typical summer day in the Spa City when the temperatures finally reach over 90 degrees? Take a look...

Creative, talented, stylish, smart, and one incredible mom. If you haven't heard yet, Cora gave birth to her 4th son on Monday August 3, at the fire station on Lake Avenue {read about it here}. Thanks to America's Bravest and her swift thinking friend Jinny {aren't girlfriends the best?}, Grahm Burns was born quickly {good news to Cora} and safely. How cool is that story for Grahm and his 3 older brothers? She and her new baby boy met up with Dad, Greg, at Saratoga Hospital where everyone is recovering nicely and trying to fathom the turn of events {not your everyday birthing plan!}.

These lovely, feminine yet edgy, sandals by Pink Duchess sold at Lucia. I was able to release a little inner Carrie Bradshaw when I saw these while shopping last week. I'm thrilled that so many of the boutiques are now carrying great shoes {at reasonable prices} that are interesting and modern to go along with the clothes they have. But, wouldn't it be nice to have a whole store with a plethora of styles to choose from? Thanks to the Shoe Depot we have a selection of practical shoes... But, let's face it girls, we aren't always practical! We need heals, straps, zippers, peep toe, wedges, pumps, and color!!!

Pretty hats at the track on Opening Day... The rain didn't deter Annette from wearing her Anne Sawyer Hat {a Kentucky Derby Favorite}.

After lunch at Deirdre's {an Opening Day tradition} the stylin' ladies head to the track for some betting!

Shopping Night was a huge success {thanks to this sassy shopper and 70 plus others and the participating stores and spas - more to come later in the week on this fun event that truly showed off the best that Saratoga has to offer}. Liz embraced the sales and all the amazing promotions our local stores and spas offered.

We filled the shelves with toiletries and towels and blankets. The workers will be happy when we open the doors on Monday. ... and discover Mimosa Gallery and much more. The West Side has had a major revitalization the last few years, trust me, I used to live on Grand Avenue. I have been amazed at what has transpired. My husband and our young family lived in a townhouse at the start of the new millennium until 4 years ago. We were pioneers moving over to the West Side. Having lived in NYC - we were ready for the challenge and were committed to living close to downtown. A townhouse on the West Side was what we could afford. I'm proud of to say we were there when it all began. We left when our family began to grow and needed a yard and more space {but we are still walking distance to downtown}. We often wish we had stayed! We go to dinner at The Local often with the girls and share stories about our first special home where they were just babies. Stopping on Beeckman and walking up and down the street that is now littered with artist galleries, neighborhood pubs, great restaurants and very cool shops makes me very proud! It's our own SoHo {should we call it WeBro?}. A walk on Beeckman Street and you get the feeling that you have stumbled on something very special. Enjoy it this weekend for First Saturday {galleries are open until 9. The neighborhood galleries and restaurants have music and specials all evening} or on Shopping Night, Thursday July 30th. Mimosa Gallery is a participating store and is a shop you won't want to miss. Everything item {art, jewelry, pottery, vases} is unique and many are designed by local artist and designers. Michelle and Michael LaLonde {owners} themselves are artist in their own right. They are designers of handbags which are, like so much on the West Side, one-of-a-kind works of art and should not be missed!

As a Saratogian, I love the track. I love the buzz that takes over our town for 6 weeks. I love the pageantry. I love getting dressed up and wearing a hat, opening day, betting my favorite exacta numbers {even if they don't always win}, cheering on the ponies and the people watching! The styles from the picnic area to the club house never disappoint. Thanks to the backstretch workers, my day at the track is filled with thoroughbreds who are well trained, beautifully groomed, and well taken care of. They are the backbone of the track. On July 30th I am asking shoppers who will participate in the shopping event to donate slightly used or new bedding {blankets and pillows} or toiletries {shampoo, soap, toothpaste, shaving cream, etc} for B.E.S.T. Summer Camps

3 Kids = 3 different camps..

Ballet, gymnastics and horse back riding. They may be all girls, but they are all have their own personalities and interests. Like all good parents we embrace their passions even if that means we turn into a glorified cab service!

Thank God for our amazing downtown. I was able to get them outfitted in two stops.

Stop One: Saratoga Dance for all the ballet needs and a new gymnastic leotard and stretch pants. They are knowledgeable, friendly and extremely helpful.

Stop Two: Saratoga Saddlery helped me get my youngest outfitted for the stables and for riding. They have beginner level boots, cute jodhpurs, and helmets {oh yeah, it's not about the outfit} that will keep her safe{r}.

Off I go.... Duty calls...

Gala Week!

Busy week. Girls are back home {yipeee - missed them so!}, family visiting {love sharing our town with our loved ones even if it keeps me from blogging!}, working on an exciting project, and it's Gala Week! The New York City Ballet opened last night {another yippeee!} and The Gala is Saturday. Thanks to my creative and witty friend, Molly, she makes the ballet gala stress-free for many of us. Find a dress {I'm here to help!}, get the nails done, line up the sitter, make an hors d'oeuvres or dessert to share, make sure my significant other is sufficiently suited {in my case - don't forget the cane!} and off we go to what is always a memorable {especially if you keep the cocktails to a minimum} night. If it's your first time experiencing the ballet gala on the great SPAC lawn... Here are some tips from my friend and a gala picnic pro... "Buy performance tickets after confirming forecast. Bring some rolling device for transport. Prepare for conditions, high heels get stuck in the mud, bugs bite and glass breaks. Blankets are nice on the slope to watch the ballet and chairs help ease tired toes". And a few disclaimers {she is a lawyer}... "Satisfaction Almost Guaranteed. Not responsible for lost or misplaced items including significant others. Injuries incurred on the dance floor or elsewhere are due to an act of God and are signs that it may be time to switch drinks or dance floors..." This is an event that cannot be missed in Saratoga. It appeals to everyone and you will see everything {best of all - the amazing NYC Ballet}. Ballet, friends, good food and drink, fireworks, and dancing for the common folks - not just the ballerinas - in 3 different tents. Grab your picnic blanket, a bottle of champagne, put on that LBD and kick off the summer season SARATOGA STYLE!

Downtown is the place to be on the 4th. Lots of activities planned in Congress Park and all around town. The All-American BBQ and Dessert festival will be going on all through town - stop by the Visitor's Center for ballot information {so American - you can vote for your favorite}. Rock out to REO Speedwagon, Styx and 38 Special at SPAC or spend it at home with family and friends. A must for all ages are the Fireworks at Congress Park at dark. Express your your independence and celebrate your way!

While the Kids are Away, the Parents will Play!

Out on a Monday night! How strange, how unexpected, how FUN! The kids are away visiting their NH cousins so my husband and I have some flexibility this week. We jumped into our week free of parental duties by a enjoying a summer night downtown. Our first stop on a nice summer evening is the Saratoga City Tavern. Known for it's 5 floors of diverse musical entertainment - the fifth floor is the place to be in the summer. The roof top bar over looks the city and is the perfect place to enjoy a beverage as the sun sets.

Our next stop? The Wine Bar. We are truly fortunate to have this establishment in our town. The quality, service and impeccable food rivals any 4 star NYC restaurant. Having spent a fair time in NYC and our love of travel has allowed us to eat in many fine restaurants. The Wine Bar's food and wine list delivers the taste and experience you would expect to get in a major metropolitan city. We sat outside, drank some very good wine {I had a glass of white Italian - my husband a White Burgundy}, I had the scallops {delicious} and my husband had the tenderloin {highly recommend} and enjoyed an evening with the man I love in the city I love!

My very hip husband is having some trouble with his hip. They may need to replace his joint but they can never take away his fabulousness. Too much pain and discomfort has caused us to postpone our trip. We will enjoy the best time of year in Saratoga {even if I have to get him a cane to do so!}. Lots to do and celebrate {my old man turns 40 this week}.

You know what I'm talking about... Big white sneakers, fanny pack, nose in a map. Although the last one may be unavoidable the other two must be avoided at all cost. Am I suggesting 3 inch heels at Disney {seen that} or that you should refrain from all comfort and practicality? Certainly not! Sensible shoes can be comfy and chic. I found these sandals by Seychelles at Violet's which serve both needs perfectly. These will easily go from day to evening, shorts to maxi dress with ease.
